About the Management Information Systems framework

Through the framework, you can buy a MIS that includes

• standard modules – the standard functionality that primary and secondary schools need
• optional modules – to build the right MIS for your school’s needs
• additional services – including training and support

The framework provides a compliant way to buy a MIS. All suppliers meet DfE’s requirements, including for cyber security and data protection. All suppliers offer the key services needed by primary and secondary schools.

You can compare suppliers, see costs and choose the option that gives your school the best value for money.

Who can use the framework

Single and multi-academy trusts

Local authority-maintained schools and groups of maintained schools

• are expected to use the framework
• can access DfE procurement support

Further education providers

• can use the framework
• cannot access DfE procurement support

Key dates

The framework is expected to launch on 1 September 2027.

Academy trusts will be required to use the framework for their MIS provision once it is launched. This includes all MIS contracts a trust holds.

Before then, schools and trusts should

• check when their current MIS contract ends
• review any notice periods or renewal arrangements
• consider when they may need to procure a new MIS

Why DfE has created the framework

Schools and trusts rely on management information systems to manage pupil, staff and operational data.

Until now, schools and trusts have usually bought MIS contracts individually. This can make it harder to compare suppliers, assess value for money and understand what levels of service and security to expect.

The framework has been created to provide a consistent way for schools and trusts to buy MIS services. All suppliers on the framework are assessed against DfE requirements, including requirements for data security, service standards and core MIS functionality.

Using a national framework will also help:

• provide greater transparency over pricing and contractual terms
• make it easier to compare suppliers
• improve consistency in how suppliers meet DfE requirements
• provide clearer supplier accountability
• support the reliable transfer of data between systems
